CFA Level III: the three pathways and the written answers.

Leggi questa guida in italiano →

The last level is the only one where you choose what to study and the only one where you write. Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth: how the pathway works, how the essays are marked, and what still stands between the exam and the charter.

CFA Institute frames Level III as “integrate and apply”. The job is no longer to analyse one instrument but to make decisions for a portfolio or a client, holding constraints, objectives and risk together.

How the exam is built

The exam contains 11 item sets and 11 essay sets — 22 question sets in total. Twenty are scored, ten of each type, while one of each is in trial status and does not count.

Each item set carries 4 multiple-choice questions worth 3 points each; each essay set carries a variable number of constructed-response items you write out. The clock is the same as Level II: 4 hours 24 minutes across two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes, each holding six item sets and five essay sets, or the reverse.

The part that surprises people

Half the exam is not multiple choice. A candidate arriving from Level II with excellent vignette technique can still lose marks on a skill they never trained: writing a short, justified answer inside the time.

The three pathways, and what is in them

Since 2025 Level III is no longer a single track. The common core is 65-70% of the exam — asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance measurement, derivatives and risk management, and ethics. The remaining 30-35% depends on the pathway you pick:

  • Portfolio Management — index strategies, active equity, fixed-income approaches and trade execution.
  • Private Markets — private equity, venture capital, real estate and infrastructure.
  • Private Wealth — wealth management, family dynamics and intergenerational transfer.

For anyone looking at the buy side this is the most relevant change in years: the Private Markets pathway brings inside the curriculum the material people used to learn only on the job, and it sits closest to how a fund actually works.

How to choose a pathway

First thing to know: the charter is the same. No pathway awards a different or superior designation, and none is officially easier.

So choose on the job you want, not on perceived difficulty. Asset management points to Portfolio Management. Funds, deals and valuing private companies point to Private Markets. Working with private clients points to Private Wealth.

The second criterion is practical: your pathway material is the material you will study worst if it bores you. Three hundred hours on a subject picked for convenience are longer than three hundred hours on your own subject.

The essays: written for marks, not for pages

Constructed-response questions do not reward an essay in the school sense. They reward the right answer, justified in the way the command word asks, inside the space provided. Three rules worth more than any manual:

  • Read the marks, not the question. The points tell you how much to write and how many minutes to spend.
  • Answer the verb. “Justify”, “determine”, “calculate” and “explain” ask for different things; justifying where determining was enough gives away time.
  • No preamble. The first line already contains the answer; the rest is the reason.

A practical module at the final level too

Since February 2025 Level III also requires a Practical Skills Module before results are released, different from the ones already completed. Same 10-20 hours as the others: not many, but they need a slot.

After the exam: 4,000 hours and the charter

Passing Level III is not enough to call yourself a CFA. You still need 4,000 hours of qualifying professional experience across a minimum of 36 months, plus CFA Institute membership and the required references. The experience has to involve the investment decision-making process, or produce work that feeds it.

The whole route, first exam to charter, is in the main CFA guide. Across the three levels and the waits between windows, CFA Institute normally puts the exam part at three to four years, and USD 3,520 to 4,570 in exam fees alone starting with the 2026 exams, depending on when you register.

When Level III really changes a CV

Level III is the level where the curriculum matches a specific job. For asset management, wealth management and portfolio management it is the most coherent signal the CFA can send, and it is the only level that lets you say which part of the market you studied properly.

For investment banking it stays an indirect signal: it says seriousness and technical depth, but a screener still looks at experience, accounts and valuation first. If you are still choosing where to aim, the useful read is the one on which signals actually count in recruiting.

The charter is years away. The seats open now.
